چکیده
Kenstowicz, Michael and Chiyoun Park. 2006. Laryngeal Features and Tone in Kyungsang Korean: a Phonetic Study. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology. Xx.x, xxx-xxx. F0 is one of the major phonetic correlates to the intensively studied laxtense-aspirated contrast in Korean obstruents. Numerous investigations of the standard Seoul dialect have shown that the vowels following tense or aspirated consonants have higher F0 than vowels following a lax or nasal consonant at the beginning of a phonological phrase. Unlike the Seoul dialect, the Kyungsang dialects have preserved the H vs. L lexical tonal contrasts of Middle Korean. This study investigates the reflexes of the laryngeal contrast in the Kyungsang dialect, where the F0 space is shared for the realization of a high vs. low tonal contrast as well as a voiced vs. voiceless laryngeal contrast in the preceding consonant.

Kyungsang Korean Subjects' Perception of Japanese Pitch-accent
The purpose of the present study is to examine whether native speakers of Kyungsang Korean are sensitive to pitch variation in vowels after Japanese voiced and voiceless plosives, given the tonogenesis account that the tone difference -H and L in vowels after aspirated and fortis consonants and after lenis ones, respectivelyis lexically specified word-initially in Korean [6]. In order to invest...
متن کاملEffects of tone on the three-way laryngeal distinction in Korean: An acoustic and aerodynamic comparison of the Seoul and South Kyungsang dialects
The three-way laryngeal distinction among voiceless Korean stops has been well documented for the Seoul dialect. The present study compares the acoustic and aerodynamic properties of this stop series between two dialects, non-tonal Seoul and tonal South Kyungsang Korean. Sixteen male Korean speakers (eight from Seoul and eight from Kyungsang) participated. Measures collected included VOT, f0 at...
متن کاملSpeakers of tonal and non-tonal Korean dialects use different cue weightings in the perception of the three-way laryngeal stop contrast
The current study investigated the perception of the three-way distinction among Korean voiceless stops in non-tonal Seoul and tonal Kyungsang Korean. The question addressed is whether listeners from these two dialects differ in the way they perceive the three stops. Forty-two Korean listeners (21 each from Seoul and South Kyungsang) were tested in a perception experiment with stimuli in which ...
متن کاملThe Tonal Structures and the Locations of the Main Accent of Kyungsang Korean Words
This paper explicitly provides the experimental analyses for the fundamental arguments of Kyungsang (KS) tone. It provides the locations of the main accent in KS words and its basic tonal units. Furthermore through the results it ultimately contributes to the typological categorization of KS Korean tone. That is, the results of the current experimental analysis of the KS words provide us the ev...
متن کاملOn the Pitch-Accent System of South Kyungsang Korean: A Phonological Perspective
Researchers on South Kyungsang Korean (SK) have been divided as to whether SK is a tone language or a pitch-accent language. While traditionally SK Korean has been viewed as a tone language (U Huh 1954, C-G Gim 1994, 1998, H-Y Lee 1994, 1997), there has been an alternative view that SK is a pitch-accent language (Ramsey 1974, 1975, JW Kim 1991, Kubozono 2007, DM Lee 2008). The split between the...
